Tennis fans around the world are rejoicing as the grand slam season has kicked off. Things are most definitely exciting on both sides of the tour, leading many to speculate as to who will dominate the sport this year. Let’s take a look at the men of the sport.

While recent years seemingly belonged to Federer and Nadal and their classic rivalry with one another, there are a few more players in the mix who should pose a threat to them both.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have had a profound impact on the sport and remain the top two in the game, but their leads aren’t as comfortable as they once used to be. As a result, it’s time to list a few more players who may finish at the top. Let’s look at the contenders.

No article like this would be proper without calling Federer the most likely person to rank atop the world. After all, he’s held a pretty firm grasp on the position for over eight years now. On the other hand, he’s getting older and others are catching up.

The player who poses the biggest threat to Federer is Rafael Nadal, who seems to have his number whenever they meet lately. Having beaten him during their last two grand slam finals matchups, the key to Nadal’s success this year will be his knees, which gave him problems last year.

On the rise is the young 20 year old Juan Martin Del Potro, whose incredible win at the US Open shocked many tennis fans. To knowledgeable ones, the Argentine’s emergence wasn’t such a surprise. The kid is incredibly talented and has what it takes to capture the world’s top ranking this year.

While Federer, Nadal, and Del Potro are the most likely contenders, there are two more who shouldn’t be overlooked.

One is Novak Djokovic, who seems to be playing some great tennis after a brief lull last year. He’s won a grand slam before and there’s no reason to believe that he can’t win some more. Since he’s ranked third in the world right now, a close eye should be kept on him.

One final player worth mentioning is Andy Murray. Since he reached the world’s number two rank last year, his consistent showing at major events could put him in a position to surprise many fans should he capture a slam or two.

Palm Springs has a rich, diverse and fascinating history. It began 10,000 years ago in the Stone Age, when the area was inhabited by an ancient tribe using bows and arrows and weaving baskets. The area began to flourish when the first American explorers made their way to the Coachella Valley in 1853. The area went from one watering hole to an international vacation paradise!

In 1853, William Blake, a geologist, while exploring, discovered a mineral pool under the desert sand. His team established a wagon route through the local mountain pass. It later became a part of the Bradshaw Stage Coach Line. Years later, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a railroad line allowing for more expansion. During this time, the Indians were given every even parcel of land, which stands today and is the reason why many areas in Palm Springs are either empty or are now leased land from the Indian Tribes. That mineral spring in the heart of the desert helped Palm Springs get its name.

As people heard about the area, the first hotel in 1886 was built. The Palm Springs Hotel (aptly named) held a measly 26 guests, but it began the trend that Palm Springs has developed into a multi-billion dollar industry. In the early 1900’s, the town grew to support the construction of the town’s first post office, school and a larger hotel, the El Mirador that held a whopping 300 guests! In 1936, the town had grown enough to initiate the formation of a committee to incorporate into a city. A city was born with the help of its first mayor, Philip Boyd, a capable businessman and committee member who helped the city get on its financial feet. The city continued to grow, flourishing as a vacation spot until World War II. During the war, the El Mirador Hotel was turned into a hospital for the military and an airport was built to accommodate the planes of injured soldiers arriving and returning to service.

The forties held a different fate for desert oasis. During World War II, General George Patton brought in troops and transformed the El Mirador Hotel into a medical hospital, creating the need for the Palm Springs Airport, now a major center for international travel through the city. During the next few decades, Hollywood discovered the little vacation spot and soon became a favorite among the Tinsel Town Elite. Stars such as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope came to blow off steam and party in the sun. Their homes are still available for rent here in the valley. During the seventies, the retirees flocked here for the warm, dry weather and friendly atmosphere, bringing many more full time residents to the valley.

Today, the city is a booming entertainment paradise. The area offers gambling, world-class entertainment, hundreds of restaurants from fine dining to bistros, golf, tennis and loads of outdoor activities in the year round sun. Vacation homes have recently become popular, allowing visitors to enjoy solitude like the stars from Hollywood’s heyday. The city has become a Mecca for conventions, pro golf tournaments, and other events that nearly take over the city with participants. The city now hosts an international film festival and two major music festivals, which are attended by thousands. All of these features, as well as the small-town feel of the city make Palm Springs the ultimate vacation destination for the elite and working class alike.
